Our
approach: If you
want to look after the forest, you must first
look after the people responsible for it – the
locals
As part
of TI’s Reforestration and Forestry Management
Programme, our first Green Initiative began in the
Loreto area of the Upper Amazon Bassin of
Peru. Working in partnership with the local
civil society, the public and the private sector
expanding our Green Initiative to
Kenya.
Our system is designed to provide
the locals with their immediate needs, and also
lay the foundations of long term sustainable
development. We do this by paying them for each
tree they plant and subsequently
manage.
These incentives have proven
successful in combating deforestation, encouraging
reforestation, putting a stop to hunger and
poverty, getting everyone in the community
involved, and dramatically improving levels of
understanding.
